A mutual exchange
Who sets the date You and the other household, together
Two households swapping homes, usually on the same agreed day. It is the only kind of move where somebody is arriving at your address while you are still leaving it.
What’s different about it
Neither property is empty. On almost every other move you go into somewhere vacant. On an exchange the place you are moving into still has a family in it, and they are waiting on you exactly as you are waiting on them.
That makes it a sequencing problem, not a carrying problem. If both households start at the same moment and both try to unload at the same moment, everybody spends the day standing in a doorway.
Both families are usually using different removers, who have never spoken to each other. That is the single most common reason an exchange day goes badly, and it is entirely fixable with one conversation beforehand.
The homes are frequently very different sizes. Downsizing into the property you swapped for is common, and what does not fit has to be decided in advance rather than discovered on the pavement.
Anything left behind becomes the other family’s problem, and they are real people you have met. That matters more here than on an ordinary move.
What we do
Contact the other household’s remover before the day and agree who loads first and who unloads first
Plan a staged sequence so neither family is waiting on a doorstep with a van full of furniture
Tell you plainly at survey if what you have will not fit the property you are moving into
Take away anything you are not keeping rather than leaving it for the incoming family
The worry
That the other side will not be ready. It happens, and the answer is to have talked to their remover in advance so there is a plan for it rather than an argument.
